시놉시스
이 이야기는 100년 전 식민지 시기의 사진 한 장에서 시작된다. 이 사진을 통해 영등포에서 오래 전 수많은 여성들이 여공으로 일했다는 것을 알게 되었다. 전쟁에 필요한 노동력을 위해 많은 농촌의 여성들이 ‘모집’에 의해 열차를 타고 도시 ‘영등포’에 도착했다. 고향을 떠나오며 기차에서 바라본 차창 밖 풍경은 여공들의 일생에 깊은 파장을 남겼다. 영등포에 도착한 여공들은 고강도 노동이 허다했고, 방직공장의 뿌연 먼지로 몸이 성할 날이 없었다. 고된 일을 견디지 못해 공장을 나와 도망치면 다시 붙잡혀왔고, 밥도 제대로 먹지 못해 쓰레기를 뒤져 먹는 날이 반복됐다. 일을 하다가 죽으면 시체는 몰래 버려지고, 새로운 어린 여공들로 대체되었다. 현재 영등포에는 거의 대부분의 대형 공장들은 사라지고 그 위에 아파트와 백화점, 경마장, 여인숙, 철공소, 행간을 읽어 낼 수 없는 공간들이나 폐허가 된 텅 빈 공간들뿐이다. 영등포에서, 그리고 여공들을 기억하고 있는 자녀들의 기억 속에서 남아있는 여공들의 흔적을 찾아 나선다. 그러다 마침내 살아남은 여공, 이옥순을 만난다. 옥순은 그 날처럼 다시 기차를 타고 이야기를 시작한다. 마침내 옥순을 태운 열차가 영등포에 도착한다.

연출의도
100년 전, 영등포 피혁 공장에서 일하던 수많은 여공 가운데 한 여성의 눈빛이 경멸에 가득 찼다. 강렬한 눈빛에 담긴 여공들의 이야기가 궁금해졌다. 일제강점기 시대에 사라진 사진 속 여공들의 이야기가 구전처럼 들려왔지만 여공들의 흔적은 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없었다. 남아 있는 것은 공장, 백화점, 먹자골목, 여인숙, 경마장, 노숙인 쉼터, 성매매촌에 이르는 영등포의 이질적인 공간들의 혼재뿐이었다. 2009년에 지어진 타임스퀘어 백화점의 길 건너편에는 1920년대에 지어진 오래된 공장이 있다. 이상하게도 영등포의 현재의 공간을 따라가다 보면 누락된 여공들의 시간을 발견할 수 있지 모른다는 생각이 든다. 맥락을 알 수 없는 단절된 공간들 사이의 틈은 어쩌면 사라진 여공들의 소실된 이야기일지도 모른다. 여공들의 삶을 여공들의 언어와 기억으로 기록하고 영등포라는 공간에서 여공들의 삶과 시간을 기억하는 사람들과 함께 영화로 이야기 하고자 한다.

Synopsis
The story begins with a picture from a hundred years ago, in the Japanese colonial era. I learned from this picture that a long time ago, countless women worked in factories of Yeongdeungpo. Many rural women were forcefully recruited to provide the labor needed to support the war. They left the countryside on a train, arriving in the urban, industrial district of Yeongdeungpo. The scenery outside the train window left a lasting impression on their lives. Once they arrived, their days were filled with high-intensity work in dust-filled textile factories, and they often fell ill due to harsh working conditions. Some attempted to run away, only to be caught and returned to even harsher conditions. They rummaged through garbage to eat, since food was scarce. The corpses of those who could not endure the long working hours were discarded in secret and soon replaced by new, younger factory workers. Most of the large factories in Yeongdeungpo have now closed, and have been replaced with a puzzling composite of apartments and department stores, racetracks, inns, iron works, and other context-less spaces or empty ruins of what used to be. I begin my search for the traces of the factory girls in Yeongdeungpo, and in the memories of their children, and eventually meet the survivors themselves. They begin narrating the forced recruitment, factory work, and their life since liberation to today.

Director Statement
I encountered a century-old picture of female factory workers who used to work at a leather factory in Dangsan-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu. The faces in the picture were full of stories—where did all the factory girls go, and what kind of unrecorded life did they have? Although their stories were orally passed on like an urban myth, the place no longer had traces of the factory girls who lived and worked there during the Japanese colonial times. What was left in their place was a heterogeneous amalgamation of factories, department stores, eateries, motels, racetracks, homeless shelters, and brothels. There is an old factory from the 1920s right across from Time Square department store in Yeongdeungpo built in 2009. I have a strange hunch that I may be able to find the omitted time of the factory girls by tracking the present space of Yeongdeungpo. In the gaps and cracks between the disconnected spaces without context may be the lost stories of the disappeared factory girls. I wish to record the life of the factory girls with their language and their memory, and share their stories through film with those who remember, or wish to remember, the presence and the years of the girls in Yeongdeungpo.
